Philippe Mius d'Entremont arrived in Pubnico with Charles de La tour in 1651. At that time Pubnico was known by the Indians as Pobomcoup, which is believed to have meant "a place where holes have been made through the ice to fish." In 1653 Charles de La Tour granted him the title of Baron. The centre of the Baronie was located in East Pubnico where the d'Entremont Manoire was situated. It seems that it is Philippe's son Jacques who mainly lived at the Manoire and raised his family there with his wife Anne de La Tour. The Manoire stood there until the time of the Expulsion of the Acadians. The Acadians of Pubnico were expelled mainly to Massachusetts in 1758. In 1766, the Amirault, Belliveau, d'Entremont, Duon (now d'Eon) and Mius (now Muise or Meuse) families left Salem, Massachussets in a vessel they constructed. They were looking for a place to live where they could practice their Catholic Religion and so they chose Quebec. During their journey they made a stop in Halifax where they were told by the authorities that they could stay in Nova Scotia and practice their religion. They headed for the Barrington region, where many of them had lived prior to the expulsion. When they arrived they discovered English New England Planters now occupied the land that they had cultivated. Because winter was near they decided to spend that winter at Sand Hills, near Barrington. Then in the spring of 1767 they went to the place where the center of the Barony had been located, Pubnico. Living in Pubnico when the Acadians arrived were a few Irish families with names such as Larkin, Murphy, and Goodwin. They were English speaking New Englanders who established themselves mainly at the head of the Harbour. The d'Entremont and Duon (d'Eon) families setteled on the west side of Pubnico harbour and the Amirault and Belliveau families settled in Middle and Lower East Pubnico, where it is still Acadian today. |
This bridge is very near the site of where the d'Entremont Manoire is beleived to have been located.
